Physical Damage
A mother can suffer from physical trauma for years after her abortion. This is a delicate procedure that requires precision and patience. If the doctor performed the procedure incorrectly or used unsanitary equipment, then the female's uterus could be damaged. In cases where the abortion is not complete, meaning that parts of the fetus are still in the uterus, the doctor must perform a second procedure or risk seriously infecting the uterine walls. There could be side effects to every abortion, just like the possible dangers in other medical procedures involving other areas of the body. The mother is most at risk when undergoing unsafe procedures because the professionalism, precision, hygiene, skill, and equipment are inferior to safe procedures. Possible side effects to any type of abortion, safe or unsafe, include bowel injury, septic shock, acute renal failure, and tetanus. (Guttmacher Institute) The risk for abortions is high, as a mother can permanently injure her body while terminating the fetus.
Emotional Trauma
There are serious emotional attachments between a mother and a child. Therefore the loss of a child is always hard, even if the termination of the fetus is your decision. It is a psychologically challenging experience that can leave an imprint on everyone's mind and mental wellbeing. In this sense, the mother is not the only one suffering. The rest of the family, including the father, grandparents, and siblings, also have a high possibility of facing emotional trauma. Mothers who have gotten abortions are more likely to commit suicide. Out of 100,000 women who had terminated their fetus, around 35 committed suicide following the procedure. When comparing this to the average rate, which is 11 per 100,000 in the general population of women, you can immediately see the correlation between suicide and abortion. (British Medical Journal) Another study done very recently concluded that women who had gotten abortions were 154% more likely to kill themselves compared to mothers who had carried to term. (Southern Medical Journal) The emotional damage from an abortion can drive a woman into depression and in severe cases, suicide.
Study on Fathers
A study found in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology shows the emotional impacts on fathers whose child was aborted.
Mothers are not the only person who feels emotional trauma following an abortion. Fathers who
had experienced the aborting of their child show emotions of regret, sadness, and severe depression.
